But, here’s the thing. Most people are intimated by making gravy, thinking it’s a long, drawn-out process. Well, my turkey gravy recipe is anything but that. So, get ready; it’s time to make gravy full of fantastic flavor the easy way.
What You Need To Make Homemade Gravy
- Turkey Drippings – after roasting or cooking a thanksgiving turkey, you’ll be left with incredibly flavorful pan drippings in the bottom of the roasting pan or slow cooker. The drippings are made with vegetables and other aromatics.
- All-purpose Flour – used as a thickening agent.
- Butter – the fat used to make a roux.
- Salt and Pepper – for added taste.

How Do You Make Gravy Without Drippings?
If you purchased a roasted turkey or fried one yourself, don’t worry! You can still make gravy. In a saucepan, sauté garlic in butter, then make the roux, by whisking in the flour. Next, pour in chicken broth and cook over medium-high heat until the sauce thickens. For added flavor, you can add fresh herbs like parsley, sage, rosemary or thyme, then serve.
How To Fix Lumpy Gravy
If you end up having a few lumps in the gravy, don’t stress. Stain the liquid through a fine mesh sieve to remove the lumps.
How To Keep Gravy Warm?
No one wants cold side dishes, and you certainly don’t want to use up valuable stove top space on thanksgiving. Here are two ways to keep gravy warm before serving:
- Pour the gravy into an insulated carafe, and keep it on the counter until ready to serve.
- Add water to a slow cooker set on low. Add the gravy to a deep bowl and place it in the water bath to simmer inside the Crock Pot to keep it warm.
For Leftovers…
If you are lucky enough to have leftover gravy, keep it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days.
